It is the right of every child to live in a safe and positive environment, where they can have a sense of security and protection, and this fundamental human right is one we will never compromise. The psychological wellbeing of children is reflected in different areas in their life and future, these areas include their academic performance, confidence in the world around them and themselves, ability to express their thoughts and feelings and much more. That is why our organization aims to provide comprehensive protection interventions for children, especially when it comes to protection against child abuse, child labor, and child marriage. It is also working on a referral program in vulnerable communities and refugee camps so that it can provide child protection services to those who need it. And to ensure this is achieved, the organization offers different kinds of support to parents and families and works on improving their livelihoods since poverty is one of the prominent causes that results in child labor and child marriage, the organization makes sure that families can provide a safe environment for their children.
Save the Children Jordan provides effective services to protect children and facilitate access to other services they need, such as formal and informal education. Through this project, the organization targeted children who are hard to reach, particularly those in the northern and southern areas of Al Aghwar and Aqaba governorate. The aim of this project was to provide case management services, psychological and social support, and protection from child labor, to support these children to enroll back to formal and informal education.

Gender inequality and economic conditions are among the most common causes behind the increase in child marriage rates, especially in vulnerable and excluded areas. The first step to resolve this issue is to make underage women more aware of their rights and empower them so they can learn how to defend themselves and claim their rights. And this is exactly what Save the Children Jordan is trying to achieve through “Girl Leaders for Change” project.
This project works on protecting girls from gender-based violence by establishing solution labs in a range of local institute in different governments to provide girls with psychological and social activities and help them build their skills. Whereas the other part of the project, “Voices Against Violence”, aims to help girls participating in the activities to raise their voices and demand an end to all kinds of violence, abuse, and mistreatment that they are subjected to.
In addition, the organization also works on managing the referred cases of girls, assessing their needs, and developing a personalized plan for each one of them so that they can access the appropriate services and care.

The social problems and issues that young girls face in Zaatari camp, such as violence, child marriage, teenage pregnancy, pose a serious threat to their lives. And with the organization’s belief in the importance of addressing these issues and empowering adolescent girls by building their economic, health and social abilities, Save the Children Jordan has designed the “Leading the Way to Change” project. This project was designed through a teenage-led approach in a safe and dedicated environment within Zaatari camp for one whole year.
The project works on providing a number of supervisors with the necessary leadership and management skills, as well as proposing and reviewing innovative solutions to address key health and social issues that have been highlighted by the girls leading the project. Furthermore, the project also aims to improve the referral programs in the case of gender-based violence, sexual and reproductive health, and make it accessible to adolescent girls.

The Covid-19 pandemic has imposed more challenges and obstacles on everyone, particularly Syrian women and children as well as vulnerable Jordanian families. This has called for effective solutions to meet the basic needs of these vulnerable groups and provide them with all the possible support in line with the Global Humanitarian Response Plan for Covid. As a result, Save the Children Jordan launched the “Responding to Critical Needs of Vulnerable Families” project, which targets marginalized Syrian and Jordanian women, children, and families in Karak governorate, and people with disabilities and chronic diseases, and works on the mandatory inclusion of survivors of sexual exploitation and abuse.
The project works on providing protection services to beneficiaries, in which they are offered psychosocial support sessions, awareness sessions about sexual exploitation and abuse, as well as case managements services to identify women subjected to gender-based violence. Child labor is one of the largest forms of child exploitation that negatively impacts the emotional, psychological, and physical wellbeing of children and deprives them of their childhood and their right to attend school and receive quality education. Therefore, Save the Children Jordan is working to implement the “Work: No Child’s Business” program to protect children who drop out and help them return to school to complete their education, which in turn guarantees they can get a decent job in the future. The program also targets parents and caregivers, in which it works on raising their awareness, guiding them on how to provide a safe and healthy environment for their children and enabling them to grow and develop.

Many girls under the age of 18 face the immense challenges of being homebound, as they are unable to access education and opportunities that can help them develop and communicate with their society, which in turn negatively affects different areas in their lives. To help decrease the occurrence of this phenomenon, the organization implemented the “Homebound Girls in Jordan” project which was used to highlight the importance of education and the pivotal role it plays in the lives of girls. In addition, it also provided girls with a range of trainings, such as financial education and reproductive health.
The project also helped bring girls back to both formal and informal education and provided them and their mothers with the support and guidance they need to start their home-based projects as a way to secure their own source of income.

Several factors, including gender inequality and poverty, are driving the increase in the rates of child marriages between children. As one of the biggest advocates of children’s rights, Save the Children Jordan works tirelessly all year long to identify children at risk of marriage and then refers them to social workers to get the appropriate services. Whereas for children who have already suffered from child marriage, the organization works on training and empowering them so that they can help them improve their ability to cope and reduce the negative effects that this experience has had on them and their lives. As part of the organization’s efforts, parents are given positive parenting skills to build supportive relationships within family members and eliminate all forms of domestic violence.

The program aims to strengthen the participant’s ability to act and defend themselves and arm them with the necessary skills and tools so that they can change the decisions that impact their lives.
In addition, the program offers psychosocial support sessions under the title “Your Safety is My Safety” to help participants adapt to their current lives and reduce the effect of war and violence on them. Not only that, but the program also targets parents in which it makes them attend positive parenting sessions so that they can help improve their children’s psychological well-being.
